The Federal Agriculture and Rural Development Linkage Council Meeting

The Federal Agricultural and Rural Development Linkage Council held a one-day meeting at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) HQs on 4 August 2009. The major focus of the meeting
spanned on issues related to the signaling message on climate change and the means to run our agricultural and rural development
activities; so that the momentum of our economic growth is not at stake.

in his welcome address what has beenachieved so far by the Council’s decisions especially by way of improving agricultural production and productivity during the main rain season, belg (short rain season) and using irrigation across the Regional States in the country. He also mentioned the need to have more discussions on the effects of the climate change that is signaling at the moment and the way to alleviate its impacts.

His Excellency Dr Abera Deressa, The State Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), in his opening address communicated the audience by stating how Regional States should respond based on their potential agro-ecologies and best practices to be able to bring about positive socioeconomic changes in the country. He also stated that the climate change that could affect our agricultural activities does not happen at the same time and does not have similar intensities, behaviors and effects throughout the country. So that Regional States should be able to focus on the different aspects of mitigating the change in climate. In his words the

meeting is a platform to discuss and produce more workable strategic solutions.

As background information to the meeting there were presentations on what has been done at the Ministry Extension Directorate level during the main rain season and what should be done next year. EIAR also presented its full-scale activities by way of producing improved seeds and expanding the perspective of scaling up of improved technologies in the country. The issue of irrigation development in areas where rain fall cannot be there in its usual form has also been elaborated by the Natural Resources Development and Conservation Directorate of MoARD. The meteorological conditions of the country during the cropping seasons have also been presented by the National Meteorological Agency. Then Regional States presented their activities during the seasons and their plans for next year.
