UNEP/GEF Project, which was established with the aim of protecting the ecosystem, species, and genetic diversity from invasive alien species for global, national and community benefit is working insistently to meet the intended target. As part of its activities, on 13th of September 2010 stakeholders from different institutions were gathered at head quarter of EIAR to participate in an awareness creation workshop on invasive alien species organized by the Project.
In the workshop, different introduction ways of invasive plant species were presented and participants had their say about them. As it was explained, objects by which invasive plant species are moved such as cars, trucks, buses, air crafts, cloths, suitcases boxes containers, path ways and others were mentioned as a main ways of dissemination. These invasive alien species also affect the livelihoods of the people in multiple ways such as by invading agricultural and grazing lands, roads, irrigation schemes, housing projects and protected areas.
The workshop also discussed on control measures and mainly clear policy approach was claimed to be necessary because of its potentially wide-ranging impacts. In addition, when species are identified as threats, appropriate and quick responses primarily establishing systems for their eradication, as well as for controlling and monitoring their introduction and effective response systems is essential. On the second day, participants visited different invasive species affected areas in Addis Abeba such as parthenium infested roads, condominium areas and they explained the relevance of the workshop in setting their plan in a way to prevent and eradicate these invading plant species. |
