Support to Ardaita AVET college

Ardaita agricultural vocational education and training college, established in March 1984, located in Gedeb Assasa woreda, West Arsi Zone of Oromia National Regional State. The College is about 305 kilometers far south east of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ardaita AVET college provides short and long-term trainings on cooperative management, cooperative accounting and auditing, and cooperative marketing. According to Abraham Girma, the college’s technology multiplication and transfer department vice dean, Ardaita AVET college trained over 20,000 trainees in short- and long-term courses over the years.

Ardaita AVET has been working with the Supporting Sustainable Agricultural Productivity (SSAP) project to support its efforts towards ensuring organizational development and capacity building. SSAP, funded by the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture and implemented by GIZ, so far supported the center by organizing capacity building trainings, creating international exposure to the management and trainers, and by providing and developing learning materials.

The college had to close two of its computer labs following a robbery and damage of its equipment during last year’s unrest in the region. This incident severely affected its educational quality. Considering the problem caused by the closure of the labs, SSAP provided desktops, LCDs, laptops and a printer. The support surely improves education quality and encourage management, staff and students of the center. Using what has been done so far as a spring board, the center shall strive to achieve its goal of becoming ‘center of excellence’ in terms of cooperative management.
