Goals
The goals of the forestry research sector are to:
- Increase economic contribution of forest goods and services at the national level by increasing foreign exchange earnings through export promotion and substitution of imports of forest products that will reduce the drain of foreign currency
- Attain self-sufficiency and satisfy demand for timber and non-timber forest products, and biomass based, energy through the diversification of products from forests and non-forest biological products
- Increase income and employment opportunities of rural and urban communities involved in the production, harvesting and processing and marketing of forest products
- Enhance security of land/tree tenure rights of rural communities, and investors in forestry (private or group)
- Enhance social equity through empowerment of resource poor communities and
women and their participation in the planning, production, and utilization
of forest products
- Enhance amenities and recreation opportunities and eco-tourism
- Promote conservation of the biophysical environment by fighting against
deforestation, land degradation, water resource degradation and biodiversity
depletion thereby reducing global warming and other undesirable environmental
hazard
- Increase knowledge concerning on-farm tree/shrub, forest and woodland resources, properties of timber and non-timber forest products
Mission
The mission of the Forest Science Research Sector is:
- to improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of rural and urban communities as well as people who, directly or indirectly, depend on forests and forest products in Ethiopia by undertaking demand-driven, client-oriented, participatory, multi-disciplinary, gender sensitive and farming systems / agro-ecology based research to generate knowledge and appropriate technologies for the development, sustainable utilization and conservation of tree/shrub, forest and woodland resources of the country, thereby enhancing agricultural production and productivity as well as wood, food and feed security through reduced land degradation and increased soil fertility.
Objectives
The general objectives of Forestry Research are to:
- Generate knowledge and technologies that can lead to economic and environmentally sound development, utilisation and conservation of on-farm tree/shrub, forest and woodland resources including biodiversity;
- Develop/adopt economic, socially acceptable and environmentally friendly farm forestry practices;
- Develop technologies for rehabilitation of degraded lands;
- Generate knowledge and technologies for optimum production, processing, sustainable utilisation and marketing of timber and non-timber forest products;
- develop/adopt appropriate technologies that will allow efficient use of biomass as source of energy;
- Develop research expertise, physical facilities, networking and the appropriate environment to respond to the forestry research and development needs of the country; ansd
- Develop and maintain an effective and efficient system for the dissemination of technology /information.
Research programs
To address research gaps, four research programs and have been identified.
The programs are:
- Forest Resources Management
- Forest Products Utilization
- Forest Seeds and Tree Improvement
- Forest Protection research
