History

History: The center was formerly established by bilateral agreement among the Ethiopian & the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) government in 1977 by the name of pathological laboratory. During this time, the research focus was only on plant diseases. After some years of its establishment Agricultural Entomology and Weed Science research was launched in addition to the plant diseases. In 1989 due to the termination of the bilateral agreement, the center was restructured under the then Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission and now called Ethiopian Science and Technology Minister. In 1994 over again, the center was restructured under the then Institute of Agriculture Research (IAR) and now called Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR).  Currently the research center is working as one of the federal research center of EIAR.

History

The history of research on fisheries and limnology dates back to the 1930, with the Italian invasion. Later on some foreign scholars from the AAU also made short term limnological studies on Ethiopian lakes in 1960s & 70s. Lake Fisheries Development Project (LFDP) which was initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture contributed in training and capacity building of the lake fishery in the country. The Joint Ethio-Russian Biological Expedition (JERBE) in collaboration with our center has been involved in describing the bio-diversity of fish and other flora and fauna of major river systems and lakes since the 1980s.For the first time in the history of research, fisheries and aquaculture has been recognized as one of the research commodities in the Ethiopian agricultural research system in 1997 with the establishment of the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization, (EARO) through the Proc.
