Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Food Science and Nutrition Research Directorate
held China-Africa technological innovation partnership workshop to strengthen partnership by
signing MoU between delegations from Shanghai Jia Tong University and EIAR-FSNR in the
area of “Grain Resource Transformation and Utilization,” aiming to contribute to Ethiopia’s food
processing sector development, where management bodies of EIAR and other concerned parties
participated.
Dr. Alganesh Tola, Director for Food science and nutrition research directorate stated in her
welcoming speech that Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SGTU) is a global leader in agricultural
research and technological innovation, particularly in food science, precision agriculture, and
sustainability areas that align closely with EIAR’s mission to advance Ethiopia’s agricultural
productivity and food security. She also stressed that the expertise of the SGTU in cutting-edge
fields such as food processing technology, bio-based preservatives, and nutritional improvement
will undoubtedly enrich ongoing efforts of EIAR-FSNRD to address critical challenges in our
food systems. Dr. Alganesh added that we are committed to fostering partnerships that bridges
science, technology, and practical solutions for farmers and agro processing industries. This visit
marks a pivotal step in strengthening the ties between the university and our institution. Through
knowledge exchange, collaborative research, and technological innovation, we aim to create
impactful outcomes that benefit both Ethiopia and China.
Professor Nigussie Dechassa, Director General of EIAR, highlighted in his opening address and
keynote speech that Ethiopia is eager to form partnerships with many countries, particularly
China, to explore many aspects, such as working together in the fields of food science,
education, and so on.
Prof. Dr. Zhongquan Sui, from Shanghai Jia Tong University delivered a presentation detailing
the overall overview of Jia Tong University.
The primary activities carried out at the workshop were technical presentations from Jia Tong
University and EIAR, a tour to the FSNR lab, the signing of MoU, and discussion.
